According to the American Institute of Stress, more than 110 million Americans take medication to help them deal with stress-related illnesses each week. During the holiday season, people predisposed to stress can find themselves feeling sad and even more stressed out than usual. Those who do not admit to themselves that they are depressed may develop stress responses to situations such as headaches, over eating, excessive drinking and difficulty sleeping.
The holiday season is fast-paced, so many people find themselves feeling unusually stressed. This is a natural response based on the fact that one finds themselves balancing the demands of shopping, parties, family obligations and possibly houseguests. These additions to your regular workload, family responsibilities and social engagements can send anyone over the edge.
Remember, if our bodies are not operating at peak, we feel stressed and, in response, our immune systems suffer. Exercise is the best way tocombat stress and anxiety. Also remember to eat nutritional food and get plenty of rest.
Lastly, you need to understand that the holiday season may trigger stress and depression. Also understand that things aren’t always going to go the way you planned and take active steps to manage your stress. In the end you may find that you actually enjoy the holidays this year more than ever.

On January 20, 2007 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Jackie’s Galaxie in Bristol, RI, join us in welcoming back Terry Chesson and the George Zecher Quintet for their second annual jazz show. Last year’s event brought in over $1,000.00 to our Special Needs Account, which goes towards helping the individuals we support in their hobbies, interests and life goals. We are hoping you join us and help us reach our fundraising goal this January!
Within the last calendar year, we applied for more than seventeen grants. Out of those, we received two possible opportunities. The grant approval market is one where competition is fierce, so this is actually a good rate of approvals overall.
The first of our possible opportunities is The Champlin Foundation.
Recently, we welcomed Keith Lang who promised that there would be a review of our application in November 2006 by their board. In the grant we applied for the funds necessary for the construction of a Snoezelene Room , which would benefit all the individuals we support. This room would be a large-scale sensory room which could also be used by interested members of the community. Theoretically, the facility would be funded through a user’s fee charged to the general community.
Our second possible opportunity is Ocean State Charities Trust. They also visited our facilities for an interview to discuss our request for $6,000.00 for the Top Drawer Art Center. Our future goal is to use these funds to help offset the costs of our individual artist’s gallery showings. As of this newsletters production date we have yet to receive a response about the status of this proposal. As always, we continually work to find other opportunities to support L.I.F.E., Inc.
